Windows 10 quality update vs. feature update

Quality updates (also called “cumulative updates”) are updates that Windows 10 downloads and installs every month automatically through Windows Update. These updates are cumulative and include new fixes, improvements, and previously available patches. Usually, Microsoft releases these updates every second Tuesday of the month, which is also referred to as “Patch Tuesday” or “Update Tuesday.” Also, internally, these updates are known as the “B” release because they roll out during the second week of the month. The Windows 10 updates include security fixes and non-security fixes.

In addition to the B release, Microsoft also pushes two more updates, known as “C” and “D” releases, during the third and fourth week of the month. These cumulative updates are optional and contain non-security fixes that the company is still testing and planning to release in the next Patch Tuesday update (the following month).

The company also provides updates outside the regular schedule, which are called “on-demand updates.” Typically, these are emergency releases that contain fixes that can’t wait for the next update for Windows 10.

Feature updates are released yearly (between October and November) and are technically new versions of Windows 10. Unlike quality updates, they include new features and improvements and require full reinstallation. However, reinstallation depends on your device’s version and the update you have to install.

Furthermore, these new versions of Windows 10 are optional, meaning they don’t install automatically until you manually trigger the process through Windows Update. However, the update will automatically install if you’re running a version nearing the end of service.

In the past, Windows 10 received two feature updates per year (during spring and fall), but Microsoft shifted from that approach to a single major update to have more time to build new versions of the OS.

Windows 10 version 22H2 is the most current release today. This feature update is known as the “October 2022 Update,” and it’s been available since October 18, 2022. Windows 10 version 1803 update history

Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018 Update) was the fifth major release (and the first update out of two rolling out in 2018) that became available starting April 30, 2018.

Windows 10 version 1709 update history

The Windows 10 version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) was the fourth major release and the second in one year. It became available on October 17, 2017. It was still referred to as version “1709,” indicating the year and month when the update was completed.

The initial version is the Windows 10 build 16299.15, and after some quality updates, the latest version is Windows 10 build 16299.2166 .

Windows 10 version 1703 update history

The Windows 10 version 1703 (Creators Update) was the third major update for the operating system, and even though it became available on April 11, 2017, Microsoft decided to refer to this version as “1703”.

The initial version is Windows 10 build 15063, and after many cumulative updates, the latest version is Windows 10 build 15063.2679 .

Windows 10 version 1607 update history

Windows 10 version 1607 (Anniversary Update) was the second and latest major update, and while Microsoft released the update on August 2, 2016, the company decided to keep the “1607” version number. This version was also known as the Windows 10 Anniversary Update .

The initial version was Windows 10 build 14393.10, and after some cumulative updates, the latest version is Windows 10 build 14393.6981 .

Windows 10 version 1511 update history

Windows 10 version 1511 was the first major update, which the company released in November 2015. This version was also known as the Windows 10 November Update .

The initial version was Windows 10 build 10586, and after many cumulative updates, the latest version is Windows 10 build 10586.1540 .

Windows 10 version 1507 update history

Windows 10 version 1507 was the initial release of the new operating system, and it was originally released on July 29, 2015.

The initial version was Windows 10 build 10240, and after many cumulative updates, the latest version is Windows 10 build 10240.20651 .

Install quality updates on Windows 10

To check and download the latest updates on Windows 10, use these steps:

1. Open Settings .
2. Click on Update & Security .
3. Click the Check for updates button.

Once you complete the steps, Windows Update will download and install all the available updates on your device.

Install optional updates on Windows 10

To download and install optional updates on Windows 10, use these steps:

1. Open Settings .
2. Click on Update & Security .
3. Click on Windows Update .
4. Click the View optional update link (if available).
5. Expand the update category with the quality update you want to download.
6. Check the optional update that you want to download.
7. Click the Download and install button.

Once you complete the steps, the package you selected will download and install automatically on the computer.

Install feature updates on Windows 10

To download and install a new feature update, use these steps:

1. Open Settings .
2. Click on Update & Security .
3. Click on Windows Update .
4. Under the “Optional updates available” section, click the Download and Install now button. Quick tip: If you see the option, click the Check for updates button. If you still do not see the option, then it is likely that the update isn’t ready for your device.
5. Click the Restart now button.

After you complete the steps, the new version of Windows 10 will download and install automatically.

Outside of the regular schedule, Microsoft is now rolling out the update KB5004945 to fix the “PrintNightmare” vulnerability on Windows 10 21H1 , 20H2, and 2004.

Recently, the software giant acknowledged a critical vulnerability described as CVE-2021-34527 that affects the Windows Print Spooler service, and it allows attackers to execute malicious code to create new administrator accounts, install programs, and access data without the user’s consent.

Immediately after confirming the vulnerability, Microsoft provided two workarounds to mitigate the issue, including the steps to disable the service temporarily and another set of instructions to set a Group Policy Object to block incoming connections to a print server.

The company has now released the update KB5004945 to permanently fix the PrintNightmare vulnerability on Windows 10 21H1, 20H2, 2004, and older versions that bumps the version number to 19041.1083, 19042.1083, and 19043.1083, respectively.

According to the documentation , after installing the update, “users who are not administrators can only install signed print drivers to a print server” to patch the vulnerability. “By default, administrators can install signed and unsigned printer drivers to a print server. The installed root certificates in the system’s Trusted Root Certification Authorities trusts signed drivers.”

Microsoft categorizes this problem as severe, and it’s recommending installing the update on all affected systems (clients and servers), starting with devices acting as print servers.

The same update is also available as KB5004946 for windows 10 version 1909. For version 1809, the update is KB5004947, and for the initial release of the operating system, the update is described as KB5004950.

You can install this out-of-band patch from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update , and clicking the Check for updates button.

You can also get the standalone version of the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog website .

On March 18, Microsoft made available yet another update (KB5001649) for Windows 10 to address more printing issues caused by the first fix released on March 15.

According to the company , after installing the update KB5001567 (March 15 update) , devices may receive unexpected results when printing from some apps or to some printers. Some problems include missing or solid color graphics, misalignment and formatting issues, or printing blank pages.

As a result of these problems, the company is now expediting a new out-of-band update to resolve the issue. The update is available as an optional update, so you need to download and install it manually through Windows Update.

You can do this by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update . Then, click the Check for Updates button, and then under the “Optional quality update available” section, click the Download and install option. After the installation, the version number will bump to build 19041.870 and 19042.870, depending on whether you are using version 2004 or 20H2.

The update is also available for download through the Microsoft Update Catalog website . Once you download the package for your version of Windows 10, double-click the file to install it.

Alongside the update for versions 20H2 and 2004, Microsoft is also making available the fixes for Windows 10 version 1909 , 1809 , 1803 , 1607 , and 1507 .

• Windows 10 update KB5001567 fixes printing issue.
• The update is available as an optional install through Windows Update.
• The update KB5001567 is also available as a manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Microsoft is now making available the update KB5001567 for devices running Windows 10 20H2 and version 2004 to resolve the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) when sending a print job to a printer from some applications.

Soon after the update KB5000802 (builds 19041.867 and 19042.867) and user reports, the company confirmed that a bug would cause an “APC_INDEX_MISMATCH” error with a blue screen when attempting to print to certain printers using some apps. And now, Microsoft is offering the update KB5001567 as an optional update that anyone can install to fix the problem.

If your device has been affected by this issue, you can apply the update manually by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update . Then, click the Check for Updates button, and then under the “Optional quality update available” section, click the Download and install option. After the installation, the version number will bump to build 19041.868 and 19042.868, depending on whether you are using version 2004 or 20H2.

The update is also available for download through the Microsoft Update Catalog website . Once you download the package that corresponds to your version of Windows 10, you can simply double-click the file to install it.

In addition, the company is making the same fix available for versions 1909 , 1809 , and 1803 .

Microsoft is now rolling out update KB4567523 outside of the regular schedule for devices running Windows 10 version 2004 to fix printing issues due to a bug with the June 9, 2020, update .

KB4567523 bumps the version number to build 19041.331 for the May 2020 Update, and according to the company fixes problem that might prevent certain printers from printing.

The print spooler might generate an error or close unexpectedly when trying to print, and no output will come from the affected printer. You might also see issues with the apps you are trying to print from, such as receiving an error, or the app might close unexpectedly. This issue might also affect software-based printers, such as when printing to PDF.

In addition to update KB4567523, the company is also pushing the same fix for older versions, including for Windows 10 version 1709 (build 16299.1937) as update KB4567515, version 1703 (build 15063.2411) as update KB4567516, version 1607 (build 14393.3755) as update KB4567517, and original release (build 10240.18609) as update KB4567518.

Windows 10 version 1909, 1903, 1809, and 1803 already received this patch with the update released on June 16, 2020 .

Uninstall Windows 10 update KB4567523 to fix problems

If the KB4567523 update is causing issues on your computer, you can always uninstall it to revert the changes.

To uninstall KB4567523 or any other quality update on Windows 10, use these steps:

1. Open Start .
2. Search for Command Prompt , right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
3. Type the following command to view the update history and press Enter : wmic qfe list brief /format:table
4. Check the Windows Update history of your device, and identify the update by its HotFixID and InstalledOn information.
5. These updates are available immediately, they’ll download and install automatically, but you can always force the update from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and clicking the Check for updates button. Outside of the regular Patch Tuesday schedule, Microsoft is now rolling out update KB4567512 for devices running Windows 10 version 1909 and 1903 to address printing issues due to a bug with the June 9, 2020, update .

KB4567512 bumps the version number to build 18362.904 and 18363.904 for the May 2019 Update and November 2019 Update, respectively, and according to the company, fixes a problem that might prevent certain printers from printing.
